Ann Altman is the sister of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The lawsuit alleges that Sam sexually assaulted her multiple times when they were children, specifically between the years of 1997 and 2006. Sam Altman has been named in a suit filed on January 6, 2025. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, alleges that the abuse began when Ann was three and Sam was twelve and continued until she was eleven and he was an adult.
Sam Altman, along with his mother and two brothers, responded with a joint statement denying the allegations, calling the report “utterly untrue.” The family said they have supported Ann financially and on medical issues for decades and are concerned about her mental health. They also suggested Ann had previously made similar claims, including demands for money.
Ann’s lawyer, Ryan J. Mahoney, pushed back against the family’s claims, saying their response is intended to “divert attention away from the harm that they caused.” Sexual abuse can result in mental health issues like PTSD, depression, and anxiety, he added, and “there is no evidence whatever that her own mental health has had any impact on the accuracy of her allegations.”
The lawsuit demands a jury trial and damages of more than $75,000. The case is still developing, though, so both sides will be able to lay out their arguments further.
