First Wave of Hostage Release as Deal for Gaza Cease-Fire Starts
A cease-fire between Israel and Hamas took effect in the Gaza Strip on Jan. 19, 2025, an important step toward the end of a 15-month conflict that has caused mass casualties and millions of refugees.
Ceasefire Implementation
The cease-fire was supposed to take effect at 11:15 a.m. local time (9:15 GMT) and had been delayed for nearly three hours after Hamas failed to immediately provide the names of hostages who were to be freed. And indeed, in this ad hoc manner, the ceasefire was declared and became effective.
Hostage Release Details
Under the terms of the ceasefire, Hamas has agreed to free three Israeli female hostages: Emily Damari, Romi Gonen, and Doron Steinbrecher. The timing of their release has not been specified, but Israeli officials have said it would happen after 4 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET).
Agreement Provisions
The truce is the first step in a broader plan to dial down the conflict and, over the coming days, allow the return of nearly 100 hostages taken captive during a Hamas assault on Oct. 7, 2023. The agreement includes several key components:
Six-Week Truce: A pause in fighting for the delivery of humanitarian aid and negotiations.
Prisoner Exchange: The release of 33 hostages in return for about 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.
Phased Implementation: Additional stages of more prisoner exchanges, full withdrawal of Israeli troops, and negotiations for a more permanent cease-fire.
Humanitarian Impact
The ceasefire has led to celebrations in Gaza as many residents slowly return to their homes. But such widespread devastation resulting from the war poses serious obstacles to rebuilding and resettling land.
Future Outlook
And while the ceasefire provides a temporary reprieve, its endurance is in question. Israeli officials say they doubt lasting peace can be achieved while Hamas remains in control of Gaza and that the group must be stripped of its military abilities. Whether it solidifies the end of the war will depend on both parties' commitment to continue the truce and establish a constructive dialogue.
